Ashtamangalya Sanskar: The Traditional Vedic Science of Garbh Sanskar

# Garbh Sanskar Is Much More Than Yoga, Pranayama and Omkar Just as marriage in our Hindu tradition is performed as a sacred Vedic ritual, our ancient tradition also describes important Vedic rituals performed during pregnancy for the wellbeing of the mother and the developing baby. Among these are three important Vedic Sanskar Vidhi, each involving specific traditional Ayurvedic medicines, rituals and practices. These are traditionally believed to support the mother, create a protective environment around her, encourage the overall development of the baby and help establish positive Garbh Sanskar. True Garbh Sanskar is not limited to yoga, pranayama, meditation or chanting Omkar. The deeper traditional concept of Garbh Sanskar includes the Ashta Mangalya Vidhi, a structured set of sacred practices that connects Ayurveda, Vedic traditions, maternal wellbeing and the developing baby. At Jijau Garbh Sanskar Centre, Nashik, we have been practising and guiding these traditional Garbh Sanskar practices since around 2003. Over the years, many expecting mothers and families have experienced and benefited from these traditional rituals under proper guidance. Interestingly, there is growing scientific and research interest internationally in the influence of the prenatal environment, maternal emotions, lifestyle and experiences on the developing baby. What was preserved in our ancient traditions is increasingly becoming a subject of modern scientific discussion and research. We have personally followed these traditional Garbh Sanskar practices during the pregnancies of our own two children as well. These rituals have been part of our tradition since ancient times. Unfortunately, with changing lifestyles and generations, many such practices gradually moved away from everyday life, and today many families are not even aware of their deeper significance. At Jijau Garbh Sanskar Centre, our approach is to understand these traditional practices through an Ayurvedic and scientific perspective and explain the reasoning behind them, rather than simply performing them as rituals. In our 9th Garbh Sanskar session, we discussed these practices in detail, including their traditional significance and scientific perspective. We also shared photographs of the rituals performed at our centre. Many expecting mothers travel from Pune, Mumbai, Aurangabad, Dhule and other cities specifically to perform these traditional Garbh Sanskar rituals at our centre. The experience is not only meaningful but also joyful and memorable for the entire family. For those who are able to do so, the 6th, 7th, 8th or 9th month of pregnancy can be considered for these traditional ceremonies, with appropriate guidance according to the individual pregnancy.
