DEMENTIA (Smrutibhransha) & Ayurveda
Dementia is a slow, progressive decline in mental function in which memory, thinking, judgement and the ability to learn are Impaired.
Causes
The most common cause of dementia is Alzheimer's disease.Other common causes are lewy body dementia abnormal destruction of brain tissue by strokes, which results in vascular dementia
Also a condition called mixed dementia.
Less comnmon causes include Parkinson's diseases, infections such as AIDS
pressure hydrocephalus and drug or alcohol abuse.
Dementia may also result from brain damage due to a head injury or from a cardiac
arrest. Radiation therapy to the head as treatment for cancer occasionally causes dementia that develops many months or years, after treatment, as part of a condition Calieu
late radiation damage.
Sometimes, dementia is worsened by disorders that can be modified. For exampe
diabetes, emphysema, or heart failure if inadequately treated can worsen dementia.
Ayurvedic view:-
It can be said that smrutibhransh is a disease of the mind developed due to
provoked Vata.
Hina satva, Rajas predominant Prakrti and the person whose mind is weakened
By all the stressful conditions are more prone to develop Smrutibhransha.
Again the regular consumption of diet dominant in Tamas and Rajas Gunas
increase the Tama and Rajo Dosas in the mind. The increased Rajas supports
the Tamas to develop Smrtibhramsa
Moreover, the Rajas diet depreciates the Dhrti (Su. Sh. 1/18). To control the
functions of the Manas is the main function of Dhrti. The mind depreciated or
lacking in Dhrti cannot restrain itself and yet indulges in excess
thinking, looses confidence, fails to achieve the decided goal and thus the
person lags behind.
